Discover Bergen: see the city from a quad, a bike or a boat
Most visitors see Bergen the same way. Bryggen, the fish market, the funicular up Fløyen, and back to the hotel before it rains again.
Discover Bergen is a small local tour company that shows you the rest of it. Its guides take you up into the hills on a quad bike, through the wooden-house alleys on an e-bike, across the fjord in a RIB, or around Nordnes after dark in search of ghosts. Most tours take an hour or two, run in small groups, and start in the city centre.

Why a guided tour is worth it here
Bergen is small, and that is exactly the problem. You can walk the whole centre in an afternoon and still miss almost everything that makes it interesting, because the stories are not on the signs.
A good local guide fixes that. Discover Bergen’s tours are built around storytelling — trade and seafaring history on the cobblestones, the people who have lived between the mountains and the sea, the darker history of Nordnes. eBike tour: alleys, wooden houses and a cinnamon bun
If you want to see the Bergen that the cruise crowds walk past, this is the one. The tour goes through the narrow cobblestone alleys and wooden houses of the old quarters, through parks and along the waterfront, past street art, small workshops and hidden courtyards.
The electric motor takes care of Bergen’s hills, so you can look around instead of pedalling hard. Along the way there is a stop at a small bakery for a skillingsbolle, the Bergen cinnamon bun, which alone is a good reason to book.

The bikes are new, with wide tyres and suspension. With four people at most, it feels more like a ride with a local friend than a guided tour.

Spooky walk: ghosts, witches and prostitutes
The best tour for a grey evening. It goes on foot through the cobblestone alleys and wooden houses of Nordnes, the old peninsula beside the harbour, and it tells the stories the tourist boards leave out.
This is where the alleged witches were burned, where prostitutes worked and where criminals were punished. The guide takes you to the houses and places that still carry those stories, and to the ghosts said to drift between the walls.

RIB tours: Bergen from the sea
A RIB is a fast, open rigid-inflatable boat, and it is the most exhilarating way to see Bergen from the water. Discover Bergen runs two versions, both for up to 12 people.
Dancing in the Waves rides the wake of the ferries, looks up at the seven mountains around the city, and takes in the main sights from the water. Bergen from the Sea heads out along the coast to hidden coves and corners you cannot reach from land.

There is also a combination tour, a quad ride around the city followed by a RIB trip along the harbour, coastline and fjords. It is listed with a booking button but no published price.

Private charters: electric boat and luxury yacht
For a group, a celebration or a special trip, Discover Bergen has two boats you can charter privately.
The eBoat is an X Shore Eelex 8000, a fully electric boat. It moves through the harbour and fjords almost silently and with zero emissions, so all you hear is the water. With a range of 100 nautical miles it can go well beyond the city, far out into the fjords.
The luxury yacht is a Princess V58, a British-built motor yacht. It sails from the centre of Bergen to hidden coves, quiet fjords and seaside restaurants. The company pitches it for anything from an intimate escape to a corporate cruise or a weekend away.
Neither boat has a published price. Both are tailored to the group, so you contact the company for an itinerary and a quote. For Norwegian companies it also arranges boat taxis, team building, julebord and summer parties.

Read the terms when you book
Routes may change with the weather and road conditions. Insurance, liability and cancellation terms apply to every tour, and you accept them when you book.
Dress for Bergen, which means waterproofs whatever the forecast says. On the quad and the RIB you are out in the wind the whole way, so bring an extra layer even in summer.
Bring your driving licence if you want to drive a quad. Without one, you can only ride as a passenger.

Discover Bergen offers something the big operators do not: small groups, local guides, and a way of seeing the city that the ordinary tourist loop misses. The prices are in line with what anything costs in Bergen, and a 90-minute guided tour for 799 kroner compares well with a dinner main in the centre.
